Great tutorial! I was browsing on the internet for a simple way to integrate that kind of information on my website (but even phpbb’s website isn’t too clear regarding this). Anyway, man, you type so freakin’ fast at times it’s inhuman haha.

yeah this is all correct, and also bare in mind that if you install WAMP, XAMP or LAMP as you generally will if you want to develop websites phpmyadmin is already included

phpMyAdmin is just a popular interface for MySQL. It is a popular way of manipulating MySQL databases with most hosting services. I would certainly recommend it as the easiest way of managing MySQL databases using a web interface.
As long as phpBB has been installed properly on your server, you won’t need to install phpMyAdmin at all to make Alex’s example work. He is just using phpMyAdmin to show us the database.
