I realize that parents don’t expect their kids to match their generosity, but if they do something incredibly kind and thoughtful is a thank-you truly sufficient, or do they hope we’ll reciprocate on a smaller-scale? I’m asking because I feel overwhelmed sometimes by the things my mom does for me – all her incredibly thoughtful gifts and gestures – and guilty that I’ve done so little for her in return. We haven’t lived together since the summer of 06 when they moved to the UK to take care of my grandparents & I insisted (it wasn’t her fault) on staying here w my dad because I did’t want to move in the middle of high school, and I’m not exaggerating when I say that she’s sent me a card nearly every day since then. I’ve never gone a week without getting a care package from her, and each one is extremely thoughtful. Today I received a huge box of these vegan power bars & snacks that I love & you can’t find here, and the crazy thing is that she’s flying in tomorrow night! She spent a freaking fortune on posting just because wanted me to have them in time for these exams I’m taking in the morning. It’s awesome, but it makes me feel like an incredibly sucky daughter for not doing more in return. I mean, she has an important job, four kids under the age of eight, and a billion things going on, and yet she finds the time to do these amazing things for me, and I’m just a high school senior and all I’ve done the whole entire semester is put together a couple of videos of my artwork, photography & music and YouTube them for her. That’s literally it. She loved them, but I mean… it took me like three hours to make. I do say thank-you for each gift, but I haven’t even mailed her a card lately.

Sorry, this is so long. I’m just worried that she might think I am thoughtless and ungrateful or something. If you are a parent, could you please just honestly tell me what you think? Please don’t sugar-coat. Just tell me if you would secretly be hurt if your daughter did’t even begin to reciprocate all the things you’ve done for her, even though she was almost 17 (this wk) and had the capability to more.

The sound quality isn’t great (laptop mic), & you can totally hear a few mistakes while I’m playing, but she really liked them. They are LONG, though, so I don’t know that anyone else would actually want to watch them. : )
